SANDOWN RACECOURSE

Located in Melbourne, Victoria the Sandown Racecourse was built for the Victoria Amateur Turf Club. It opened in June 1965 in front of a crowd of 52,000. Sandown is the only metropolitan racecourse built in the twentieth century.

The course is located in the suburb of Springvale in the City of Greater Dandenong. Melbourne Central Business District is twenty five kilometres away. In October 2001 the original 1892 metre oval course was redeveloped; the home turn, the main straight and turn out of the straight were widened which created two tracks.

The course with the outer turn and was named Sandown Hillside and the inner home turn was named Sandown Lakeside.

Hillside is the larger of the two with a 2087m circumference and a 407m straight. Lakeside also has a 407m straight but with a smaller 1857m circumference. The anticlockwise track has a steep rise in the home straight to the winning post which suits stronger finishers.

Major races held here include the Zipping Classic and the Sandown Guineas. The Sandown Carnival takes places in November each year and features Sandown Classic Day and Eclipse Stakes Day.

The Sandown Carnival is the traditional close of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. This carnival attracted so many overseas horses that a quarantine centre was established in 1997. The Sandown Racecourse also has a motor racing circuit called the Sandown Raceway on the outside of the course.
